Caricom Postpones Annual Summit Over Category 4 Hurricane Beryl

The leaders of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) agreed on Sunday to postpone their forty-seventh annual summit, to be held next Wednesday to Friday in Granada, due to the passage through the region of Hurricane Beryl, category 4.

“The meetings scheduled to be held in Grenada this week are postponed to a date to be determined. The main objective of the entire Community is to prepare for the impact of the hurricane and protect the safety of the population,” a senior CARICOM official told a press agency.

CARICOM spread a statement announcing the postoning confirming that the next meeting it is indeterminate.

“The primary focus of the Community is now on citizen safety and security. Several Member States, including host nation Grenada, are now engaged in emergency preparations and planning to address the aftermath of the hurricane,” says the statement.

Also, CARICOM urged on its statement to the people of the countries in the path of this hurricane “to take all necessary protective measures.”

“The Community stands ready to support our Member States which will be affected by this dangerous hurricane,” said the Caribbean Community.

Beryl strengthened into category 4 and will pass early on Sunday night south of Barbados, through Saint Vincent and the Grenadines overnight and then through Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and Tobago.
